Canada and China have acceded to the Apostille Convention
Canada acceded to the Apostille Convention on January 11, 2024. Canada was one of the few Western countries that had not yet joined. The legalization of birth and marriage certificates from Canada previously took many months. With accession to this treaty, this is a thing of the past. Canadian citizens should contact Global Affairs Canada for the Apostille. The English and French deeds that have an Apostille do not need to be translated into Dutch. The IND accepts certificates in these two languages.
China had already acceded to the Apostille Convention on November 7, 2023. Deeds from China must first be translated in China by a notary into English. The notary will create a sealed document of the original deed and the translation. This document must then be provided with an Apostille. The Apostille is placed by the Foreign Affairs Offices in China.
