Far fewer highly skilled migrants in 2020: a decrease of 35%
In 2020 there was a huge decrease in the number of applications for highly skilled migrants, European blue cards and intra corporate transfers (ICT) visas. In 2019, a total of 20,970 applications had been submitted. In 2020 that number dropped to 13,710. That is a decrease of almost 35%. The cause, of course, lies in the Covid-19 outbreak. As a result, the economic (world) situation in the second quarter of 2020 was very uncertain, and air traffic also came to a standstill for a considerable period.
For the first time in years, the number of positive decisions on applications for a highly skilled migrant, European blue card and intra-company transfer visas has also fallen. The number of approvals amounted to 91%. In previous years this was 94%.
In 2020 most highly skilled migrants still come from India. This was also the case in previous years. For the first time, China comes second as the country from which most highly skilled migrants arrive. The United States has always been second behind India. The United States has now dropped to the third place.
