No more traveling out of Schengen area to activate the visa-exempt term of 90 days
The Immigration and Naturalization Service announced on 31 January 2024, that foreign nationals not requiring a visa will no longer have to travel outside of the Netherlands (or the Schengen area) after their residence permit expires in order to use their visa-exempt term. They may remain in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days, provided this period has not yet been exceeded.
It is important that the foreign national who is not required to have a visa retains his expired residence document until he travels outside of the Netherlands or the Schengen area. With this, the foreign national demonstrates that he has had lawful residence in the Netherlands.
