The Dutch government has decided to abolish the scheme for foreign investors and high net worth individuals. This scheme has never been popular since its entry into force in 2013 compared to similar schemes in other European countries. Between 10 to 20 residence permits have been granted to foreign investors and wealthy foreign nationals since 2013. The scheme has recently been relaxed by the government to see whether more use would be made of it. That does not appear to be the case now. The government does not want to make the scheme more flexible, because then the guarantees against abuse of the scheme cannot be properly safeguarded, according to the government. The scheme will be phased out in the second half of 2021.
