Registration in the Entry/Exit System (EES) as of October 12

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will be operational from October 12, 2025. The EES registers travelers who are not nationals of any EU country. Both travelers with a short-stay Schengen visa and travellers who are eligible for visa-free stay in the EU are automatically registered when they cross an EU border. The person’s name, type of travel document, biometric data, and the date and place of entry and exit are recorded.

Currently, this registration is still done manually by checking entry and exit stamps in the passport. This makes it difficult to check whether a traveller has already exceeded the permitted 90 days within a 180-day period. Automated border controls will be implemented from October 12, 2025. We therefore recommend that you carefully keep track of your days spent in the Schengen area.

Foreigners with a residence permit in the Netherlands may stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days after their permit expired, provided they are visa-free or have a valid Schengen visa. These individuals can also register in the Entry/Exit System (EES). When they travel out of the Netherlands, they must demonstrate that they were still legally in the Netherlands or one of the Schengen countries and that they left on time. Registration is only possible for persons requiring a visa after obtaining a Schengen visa outside the Netherlands.

EU countries implementing the EES have six months to do so. During the first six months, border controls will also issue entry and exit stamps. More information can also be found on the European Union website.
