Using savings for family reunification residence permit application

The IND now also accepts personal funds, such as savings, as a source of income used to demonstrate compliance with the IND means requirement (IB 2026/21).

However, some conditions apply.

  • The personal assets must be at least 36 times the IND gross monthly threshold (including holiday allowance).
  • This would now amount to a minimum sum of € 88,126.20.

According to the IND, such an amount demonstrates that there are sufficient assets to provide for one’s livelihood in the near future. According to the IND, in that case, no reliance will be placed on public funds.

  • It must concern personal assets that are freely withdrawable, such as a sum of money in a savings account.
  • The origin of the money must be clear and explainable. If the sum of money originates from a gift or inheritance, the IND may request proof that the statutory tax has been paid.
  • The IND may request bank statements going back one year, calculated from the date of the residence permit application.

This is to verify whether the sum of money has been in the bank account for some time.

Are these conditions met? Then a residence permit for a partner or spouse can be applied for.
