British? Apply for EU permanent residence now!
In case of a hard Brexit (‘no deal’) British nationals will lose their EU status and become third country nationals after 29 March 2019. What to do?
The Dutch Secretary of State of Internal Affairs informed the Dutch Parliament that their will be a transitional regime until 1 July 2020. Under this transitional period British nationals will maintain the EU-right they have at this moment. After 1 July 2020 British nationals must apply for a regular residence permit like other third country nationals.
The Secretary of State made public (letter in Dutch) that British nationals that have an EU permanent residence permit (‘EU Durable Stay Permit’) will receive a regular permanent residence permit without having to pass the Dutch integration exam. This group of British nationals do not have to apply for the permanent residence permit. They will receive an invitation letter from the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) to collect their EC long term residence permit free of charge.
So in case you qualify at this moment for the EU permanent residence permit, apply now!
In case you do not yet have 5 years of legal stay required for the EU permanent residence permit, the Secretary of State informed, that after 1 April 2020 you can apply for a regular residence permit under the same conditions that are applicable for EU nationals. So for example a work permit is not required to be able to work. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) also published and information letter (in English).
